Astrofengaiá was displayed near the museum's main entrance during the Getty Center's PST ART: Art & Science Collide exhibition series, thematically centered on light. Originally commissioned for the Center's 25th anniversary festivities, Astrofengaiá was invited to participate in the Getty's Art & Science Family Festival in 2024. The art installation interacts spectacularly with people, wind and sunlight. Reflective walls act as a giant lens, bending light into elaborate starburst patterns, continually morphing as our sun journeys across the sky. Geometric shadows grow and contract throughout the day, while diamond-fire shards of light streak across the ground with each breeze. Like a hall of mirrors, people's reflections comingle with foreground and background, evoking philosophical subtleties on interconnectedness and non-locality. A homespun shrine to light, Astrofengaiá mindfully embellishes the beauty of our solar system's resident star. Lovingly made from upcycled and reclaimed materials, glistening surfaces create a semi-enclosed meditative space. Pillows invite participants to relax and listen through headphones to a custom soundscape crafted from ambient electronica, synths, spoken-word cosmological musings, and archival NASA sounds including Hubble deep-space star-cluster sonifications.
